I took this photo while in Park City, Utah, for the 2013 National Combustion Conference. I used to ski in the Rockies most winters, and spent a summer in the Rockies of New Mexico, but this was my first time seeing them in spring. There was a beautiful sense of rebirth everywhere I looked: streams resuming their halted flow, trees committing to a new generation of leaves, and a flurry of cheerful animal activity. And of course, the flowers. There were tons of wildflowers everywhere, bursting forth from the newly thawed ground. Nowhere were they more prominent than in the meadows which, in winter, are the ski slopes. I was told that in a couple weeks, the slopes would be busy once again, this time with mountain bikers. But when I was there, I was practically the only soul on the entire mountain. It felt like the flora and fauna were somehow aware that this was to be their only solace from the throngs of tourists, and were trying their best to condense their yearly duties into these few short weeks.
